Tibet, governed by spiritual leaders, has long been known as the Roof of the world. Mt Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, revered holy places both for Hindus and Buddhist, are situated in the West of Tibet. This adventurous, 2 week trip, starts in Kathmandu and ends at the base of Mt. Kailash. The highlight of the trip is the "Parikrama" or "Kora" around the holy Mt. Kailash (a 3 day walk).
Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu, transfer to Vaishali Hotel in Thamel
Day 02: Take a tour of the Pashupatinath temple or the sleeping Vishnu at Budhanilkantha.
Day 03: Drive to the Nepal- China border, walk across the Friendship Bridge. After the formalities, drive up to Zangmu (2300m). Total distance from KTM to Zangmu 123km. Overnight at hotel.
Day 04: Take a short 1 and half hour, drive to Nyalam, (38km). A visit to the Milarepa cave. Stay at Nyalam for acclimatization (3600m).
Day 05: Take a rather long drive to Saga-232km, passing through pastures, herders looking after yaks and sheep. Cross the Brahmaputra River, reach Saga at 4600m. Overnight at local guest house.
Day 06: After breakfast drive to Paryang, 4600m, 230km, 6-7 hours. The drive is comparatively easy and comfortable as the road is almost level. Overnight at Guest House.
Day 07: Drive to Mansarovar Lake via Mayum River, cross Mayum La pass (5200m). Today we get the first sight of the holy Mt. Kailash. Arrive at the holy Mansarovar Lake (4560m), 277km. Overnight at Guest House.
Day 08: After the morning bath and puja at the holy Mansarovar Lake, a drive to Darchen (4560m),
Darchen (Tarchen) is a base camp for the "Parikrama" or "Kora" (circumnavigation) around the holy Mt. Kailash.
Day 09: Begin the exciting trek along the beautiful rocky cliff and waterfalls for the 'Kora'. View of the holy Mount Kailash is visible. Diraphuk is reached after about 7 hrs walk. Overnight here, at 4775m, tent or lodge.
Day 10: Trek to Zutulphuk via Dolma La pass at 18600 ft. We reach Zutulphuk in the late afternoon, the cave where Milarepa performed miracles. – 22km (7–8 hrs).
Day 11: Trek back to Darchen. The Kailash circuit (circumnavigation) on the holiest of all pilgrimages in Tibet. It is said that a single "Parikrama" erases the sins of lifetime while 108 circumnavigations will achieve Nirvana (salvation).
Day 12: Drive back to Paryang 4540m, 277km. Overnight at Guest House.
Day 13: Drive to Saga, 4850m, 230km. Overnight at Guest House.
Day 14: Drive to Nyalam, 232km. Overnight at Guest House.
Day 15: Drive back to Kathmandu. Overnight at Hotel Vaishali.
